The 4 C’s: Defining Diamond Quality
A diamond’s value and beauty are determined by four key characteristics, known as the 4 C’s—Carat, Clarity, Color, and Cut. These globally recognized standards ensure transparency and quality.
C for Carat (Weight)
Carat is the unit used to measure a diamond’s weight. 1 carat = 0.200 grams, derived from the carob tree seeds(keratia), and is further divided into 100 points.
C for Clarity (Purity)
A diamond’s clarity is determined by the presence of inclusions, natural internal characteristics within the stone. The fewer the inclusions, the purer and more valuable the diamond.
C for Color
The most sought-after and valuable diamonds are colorless (highest white quality). The whiter the diamond, the rarer and more precious it is. However, diamonds can also be found in champagne, brown, yellow, pink, blue, and green hues, with the rarity of the color influencing its value.
C for Cut
A diamond’s cut and proportions determine how it reflects light. A perfectly cut diamond will maximize brilliance by reflecting all incoming light through the top of the stone.
